About the site.Updated 22/4/08

Why I bother with the site.

The site is here to share quiet routes with other people, usually by means of public transport to the start and end points. Eryri is well served by the Sherpa buses, and a little bit of thinking before the walk can ensure you start and end at suitable points. Anyone who's driven past Pen y Gwryd hotel on a busy weekend / bank holiday will have seen how many cars are parked along the roadside. Many of these are walkers. Many areas in the park cannot be so easily accessed by public transport, and so I will be devising 2/3 day routes to visit these. If you can justify taking cars into the park, go ahead.

Most of the routes are along quiet, preferably pathless, areas. Obviously Snowdon isn't, but I do have a couple of very quiet Snowdon routes up my sleeve. It's essential thay you therefore have good navigational skills, and carry map, compass and can use them. These are routes, on the whole, where the walker can find solitude and avoid the crowds. So, if you run a club and fancy these routes, consider that. Large groups of people don't belong in these areas. If you must take a crowd, then stagger them along different routes or times. I'm going to piss off a load of Ramblers here, but you can hear large groups approach a mile off, and it does destroy the soitude for all. It's generally accepted that mountain groups of up to 6 are reasonable, and i have no problem with these numbers. You've literally got to get out of the way for some, where groups of 15 are common i've bumped into one of above 30.

Personally, i enjoy walking alone or with a couple of others. I find i can go where I want without others walking too fast or, less often, too slow. I can also navigate without overeager members shooting off in the wrong direction. I can also enjoy the day without having someone talking all the time, though we're all guilty of that. Some quarters condemn solo walkers. You'd think we drove 4x4s or some other countryside no-no. However, you do need to take much more care when alone. You depend on yourself only, there is nobody to get you out of trouble or go off for help. You must have confidence in your ability to navigate and negotiate the day's terrain (fitness is my bugbear, having a bad knee). Other than your own skill, you should inform someone where you are going for the day, leave them a map printed out if you have the software or a routecard. I tend to be rather lax here, and usually inform my wife i'm off up so and so from here to here, i'll be home by...

The routes have been provided in a vaguely descriptive manner. Hopefully you can follow it from there, if not then i provide files that can be imported into Tracklogs and Memory map. I tried producing Anquet maps, but it's not compatible with my files. I will provide files in .gpx format that can be uploaded to GPS, and then into your mapping software. Thankfully Multimap.com have allowed me to place OS maps on the site when the OS themselves told me that I can't. Funny old world.

Anything else? Not at the minuite. i'll be sure to add it to here if there is.
