MAP OF NORTH WALES

Clickable map of Eryri / North Wales. Ok, technically a lot of this area isn't what people call Eryri, but i've decided to include the areas below as the scope for this website. Routes in the new area will (eventually) be less trip report and more factual and brief, including an 'at a glance' section with distance, summits and map details.

PHYSICAL MAP OF NORTH WALES - CLICKABLE Carneddau Yr Wyddfa Glyderau Eifionydd and Lleyn Peninsula Moelwynion Mynydd Hiraethog Clwydian Range Arenig Rhinogydd Cader Idris Aran Berwyn Pumlumon and Elenydd Ynys Mon/Anglesey Here Be Dragons...:-) Here be Monsters Here be Pirates

1.Ynys Mon/Anglesey. There is some beautiful coastal scenery here, and even an unofficial long distance footpath. See the official site here, which includes maps, direction and is very informative for this type of council run site. There are also lots of walks from locations on the site.

2. Eifionydd Hills and Llyn Peninsula. This includes the Nantlle ridge, Mynydd Mawr, Moel Hebog and Yr Eifl hills, together with some beautiful coastal walking along the peninsula. On my to do list is a walk covering this peninsula. The Edge of Wales website describe a route, but dont give details of this, presumably you get these on request or if you pay for their baggage handling services. Better is the website on Gwynedd Council's site, it's nearly as good as the Anglesey one above, link to it from my Llyn pages

3. Carneddau. Everything from Bangor to Conwy to Betws y Coed and up the A5 to Bangor. Surrounded by the A55 to the north, A5 south and A470 to the East. Definately some of the best walking country in the country, with the character of Ogwen in the south and more remote, rolling hills to the North and East.

4. Glyderau. Surrounding Ogwen, these hills require no introduction. Include the classics of Tryfan and Glyder Fawr/Fach and lesser frequented Elidir Fawr and Y Garn. To the West, these mountains have been quarried for their slate, which gave birth to the Towns and villages surrounding the Glyderau (Bethesda, Deinolen, Dinorwig). Old quarry workings abound, and it can be fascinating for amateur industrial archaeologists. A classic walk is a traverse of the whole range from Elidir Fawr over the range to Capel Curig.

5. Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon). Crib Goch, Train, Cafe on Summit. Mostly Harmless.

6. Moelwynion. Strange bunch these. Start from the solitary Carnedd Moel Siabod in the north, which is tentatively linked to the southern Moelwynion proper further south. These hills also stretch east towards Dolwyddelan, for convenience.

7. Mynydd Hiraethog. Moorland and some forestry. For a quieter day out.

8. Clwydian Range. The high point of this range is Moel Famau at 554 metres, but despite lack of altitude still a beautiful walking area. It is traversed from north to south (or south to north) by the Offa's Dyke LDP. An interesting, well written account of the walk can be found here. Another account can be found here.

9. Rhinogydd. These hills fill the wild expanse between Barmouth, Dolgellau, Harlech and Trawsfynydd.

10. Arenig. Remote, difficult to get to, you won't see a soul. High point is Arenig Fawr at 854m.

11. Berwyn. Quiet, ignored. More heather. Even UFOs...Here's the sensational account, and more likely explanation. (Click on link to Berwyn Mountain Incident it's a word file). Go here to find details of the stone circles mentioned in the UFO articles on the slopes of the Berwyn.

12. Aran. Long, lonely ridge from Llanuwchlyn on Llyn Tegid down to Dinas Mawddwy. Used to have access problems.

13. Cadair Idris. Ok, i've plonked all these hills together but there is the main Cadair Idris range, plus two other lowlier ridges of the Dyfi Hills.

14. Pumlumon and Elenydd. Wild, remote. Lonliest hills south of the border. If you want solitude, head here. If you can't navigate in a pea souper, then stick to Snowdon. This area should have been wales 4th national park, The Cambrian Mountains, and the website has all the information you'll need on that. Or how about crossing these hills over the Monk's Trod? An ancient byway that links Ystrad Fflyr (Strata Florida) to Abbey Cwmhir, and under constant threat by petrol heads, see the article on the CPRW website for details of this.
