llanddwynA coastal walk to this historic island off the west coast of Anglesey. Easy to followroute along the beach, with a possible alternative via the forestry plantation if you find the sand too soft. Make sure you stop at the toll for the car-park (at SH 415 649), as we nearly drove past. Not surprising, considering he was sat in an old metro.

It's important that you don't get trapped on the island due to the tide. The map shows the island as being attached to the mainland, but it clearly isn't on the ground! It's possibly only an island at the highest tides, but be aware of this.

1. The route starts at the car park in Newborough forest. You need to leave the carpark towards the sea, where there is a narrow sandy path that brings you out onllanddwyn the shore.

2. The island is now clearly visible to your right, and a short walk along the beachwill bring you up to the island. Before you get onto the island, there is a shelter with a map showing the main paths. The easier option is straight ahead along a wide track. More challenging, but not hard, is the path to the left that follows the coastline.

church llanddwyn3. You wil pass a sandy beach below you, a path leads to this. You cannot easily get to the end via the beach, so you need to stick to the path. You will pass a ruinedchurch to your right. Soon, you arrive at the old Pilot's Cottages, and the towers at the island's end are visible.

4. You can visit whichever you want (or both), before returning back past the large cross.

llanddwyn5. You soon return to the wider track, and you can follow this all the way to theshelter. A better walk takes you left, and follows the coastline for much better views. This latter route does have an awkward descent at the end down a sandy and polished rock gully.

6. Retrace your steps, or you can enter the forest (you will see cars parked there) and follow the forestry track right to return to the car park.
